A Blueprint for Creating Operational Excellence in Safety, Quality and Efficiency

This multi-month course helps physicians acquire the skills to become quality leaders in team care settings. The program is facilitated by LifeWings and focuses on improving the process for delivery of care through better clinical teamwork. Each physician participant undertakes a course project that allows him or her to directly apply the skills acquired in the Lab in a real-world environment, including in his or her own local clinical setting, to improve quality, safety and efficiency and reduce costs. The program is open to TMA members only. Participants earn 27 CME hours* through the program.

Educational Content

  • Orientation Webinar: Introduction to the “big picture” for the leadership course, including information on timeline, milestones, conditions-of-participation, critical success factors, and readiness assessments.
  • Leadership Development: A 1.5-day workshop to provide the change leadership “blueprint” for implementing and sustaining a successful initiative.
  • Organizational Change Team Follow Up: An hour-long webinar to ensure collaborative members have established an effective Organizational Change Team.
  • Measurement Plan Follow Up: This webinar helps participants create an effective data collection and analysis plan.
  • Hardwired Safety Tools Implementation Webinar: An online training to establish accountability for the development and implementation process.
  • Leading Lean Process Improvement Initiatives: A one-day workshop to train physician leaders to master the challenges of leading and implementing Lean initiatives. Participants learn the change skills required to implement continuous performance improvement methodologies and build a culture that supports Lean throughout the organization.
  • Training to Standardized Work: Education on how to train staff to reliably use the standardized work created by Lean Process Improvement initiatives.
  • The Toyota-Kata Webinar: How to use continuous daily quality improvement methods and key program management activities for sustained improvements, based on the Toyota-Kata model.
  • Graduation Project and Assignment Planning: A launch session to discuss the independent learning experience and provide guidance on project selection and design. This occurs as leadership track participants prepare to lead an inter-professional team to implement a solution to enhance patient safety and improve the quality of patient care.
  • Six Months of Coaching: Collaborative team members have access to six months of project coaching by telephone, email and/or webinar.

*The Tennessee Medical Association is accredited by the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education (ACCME) to provide continuing medical education for physicians.
Tennessee Medical Association designates this live activity for a maximum of 27 AMA PRA Category 1 Credit.  Physicians should claim only the credit commensurate with the extent of their participation in the activity.

The 2017 Physician Leadership Lab kicked off on Wednesday, Jan. 11 and runs through October. 


Nominations and applications are accepted each year. Each nominee or applicant is required to complete and submit an application form (provided by TMA). Nominees and applicants will be notified of their acceptance. The application period for the 2017 Leadership Lab has closed, but you can begin the application process below to be placed on the wait list for the 2018 Lab.
