What is the TMA Resident & Fellow Section?

The purpose of the Resident and Fellows Section is to increase involvement of residents and fellows in the Tennessee Medical Association and the component medical societies; to introduce residents and fellows to the programs, benefits, services and policy-making structure of the organizing TMA itself; and to help provide programs and services that will assist RFS members in their transition from training programs to fulltime practice.

How do I become 'a member?'

To become a member of the RFS, you must be a member of your component medical society and the TMA. Membership is 'unified' meaning that to be a member of one, your must be a member of both. The good news is that membership is FREE to all physician members of the Tennessee Medical Association who are actively enrolled in postgraduate residency programs or fellowships. Simply complete a short application and you are on your way. Once your application is approved by the local medical society, you will receive a membership kit that will provide you with information on the benefits and services of the TMA and your membership ID, and website login information.

What are the benefits of membership?

Membership in the TMA aligns you with more than 6,000 practicing physicians across the state of Tennessee. The primary mission of TMA is to serve as the main advocate for physician members in the state legislature, to the insurance industry and to the regulatory authorities. TMA provides ongoing educational opportunities to physician in all specialties and stands as a vital information resource for today's practicing physicians. We provide legal and governmental consultation, public relations and policy development support, practice management services and a voice in ever-evolving practice of medicine to every member of the organization.
The TMA RFS is an association within an association for residents and fellows. RFS membership helps physicians-in-training the opportunity to learn more about the business of medicine and all that membership in organized medicine offers to physicians. The RFS also provides it members with an active voice in the decision making process of the association. By allowing residents and fellows the chance to become involved in our organization early in their careers will hopefully develop a long-term, mutually beneficial relationship over the career life of the member.
TMA is a membership organization. The services we offer and the activities we become involved in are at the direction of the membership. Funds to support these activities are generated primary through membership dues.

Local Opportunities and Chapters

The Governing Council (or board) of the TMA RFS serves as the governing body of the organization. By design, the TMA RFS is seeking to establish local chapters at all the training programs throughout the state. In cooperation with local medical societies and physician liaisons, local chapters will carry out the projects and services of the RFS. Each chapter will be governed by its own Governing Council and will have representatives on the TMA RFS Governing Council.
