Practices Need To Prepare Now for Post-Pandemic Audits

Payers are not auditing during the public health emergency (PHE); however, they are gearing up to audit telehealth services that were provided during the PHE. 

Here are a few tips to help providers survive a these audits: 

Document the mode of the service (i.e. audio/visual, audio)
Document how consent to receive telehealth services was obtained (i.e. verbal or on file)
Document the visit as if the patient had been seen in person, including chief complaint and HPI, to support medical necessity
Document the time spent with the patient
Use appropriate Place of Service codes and modifiers according to individual payer policies
Be aware of coverage timeframes – PHE telemedicine coverage policies are temporary
