TMA Physicians Issue Urgent Appeal to County Mayors

November 6, 2020

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – The Tennessee Medical Association has issued a second, and more urgent appeal to County Mayors across the state for the implementation of mask requirements to fight the spread of COVID-19.

The letter, signed by TMA's president and 17 additional physicians in statewide leadership positions for the organization, cites a second large wave of COVID-19 infections which is even more intense than the previous wave in July and August. The state's physicians are urgently asking for support before families and communities increase transmissions over the Thanksgiving holidays.

"We have only a few ways to slow the virus, and among the most effective is the wearing of face coverings or masks in public," the letter states. "We appreciate Governor Bill Lee for extending his order allowing Tennessee County Mayors to enact mask requirement orders. Consistent with our prior recommendations outlined in our July 8, 2020 letter to Tennessee County Mayors, we ask those of you in high-risk counties with high case counts to please utilize this authority immediately.
