Senior Physicians Section
Thank you for your interest in learning more about our efforts to establish the Tennessee Medical Association's Senior Physician Section (SPS).
The SPS is presently in development stage, meaning the TMA Board of Trustees has specified that at least 100 members must sign up before the Section becomes active.
About the Section
The Senior Physician Section’s goal is to maintain involvement of senior physicians in the TMA and its component medical societies by providing programs, benefits and services tailored to their unique needs. The SPS will help promote organized medicine and continue to engage TMA's senior members by fostering ongoing interaction and collegiality statewide.
A 2024 survey in 2024 indicated that our senior members share some common concerns that will be the basis of our programming, including:
- Retirement Planning and Career Transition - Financial, emotional and physical preparation for retirement, including navigating part-time work, reducing workload and maintaining purpose.
- Maintaining Relevance and Engagement - Finding ways for senior physicians to remain relevant, engaged in healthcare and contributing through mentoring, part-time work or knowledge-sharing.
Based on these expressed interests, the SPS initial focus will include activities related to:
- Sharing experiences with colleagues nearing retirement
- Promoting charity work opportunities
- Social engagement and educational events

Forming the Section

In October 2024, the TMA Board approved governing principles to guide the establishment and operations of the section and established an initial fee of $300 to participate in and support of the activities for the SPS.
Dues-exempt members are asked to contribute this amount to help establish the Section. Members in active or part-time practice who qualify for the Section’s age requirement and pay annual dues may join the section with no additional dues required.
