TMEF Medical School Scholarship 

 

The Tennessee Medical Education Fund, Inc. (TMEF) is an independent, nonprofit 501 (c) 3 corporation, created by the Tennessee Medical Association in 1963 with the purpose to provide scholarships to students enrolled in an accredited medical school within the state of Tennessee.

Scholarship Amounts

The scholarships available are entirely “need based” without regard to course of study, academic performance or year of school and are restricted for medical school expenses only. Scholarship award funds are distributed directly to the medical school in which the applicant is enrolled. Scholarships range from $2,500 - $10,000 per year, based on financial need. Financial need is determined in part by a financial need ranking by the applicable medical school.

Requirements for Application

  • Must be a citizen of the United States and a legal resident of the state of Tennessee as certified by the medical school in which enrolled
  • Must be enrolled in or accepted for enrollment in an accredited medical school within the state of Tennessee
  • Provide documentation of financial need to pursue a course of study in medicine by meeting Federal Unsubsidized William D. Ford Loan eligibility requirements
  • Must be a member of the Tennessee Medical Association

TMEF 2023-24 Scholarship Program Timeline

  • January 15: 2023-24 scholarship application opens
  • February 15: Preliminary report to schools on applicants
  • March 15: Preliminary report to schools on applicants
  • April 14: 2023-24 application closes, final reports to schools for certification
  • May: TMEF BOD meets to award scholarships
  • May/June: Notify schools and selected students of scholarship awards; Students will receive award letters via email provided on application
  • June: First distribution checks to schools – 50% of total award value
  • December: Second distribution checks to schools – 50% of total award value
  • January 15, 2024: 2024-25 Call for scholarships to schools and application opens
