Tennessee Medical Education Fund

The Tennessee Medical Education Fund Inc., is an independent, nonprofit 501(c)3 corporation, created by the Tennessee Medical Association in 1963 to provide scholarships to medical students in Tennessee medical schools, residents and physicians in medical school or practicing medicine in Tennessee and also supports other medical student and resident programs.

The ability of the TMEF to provide over $6 million in financial assistance over the last 50 years has been largely due to the ongoing support of the Tennessee Medical Association through its leadership and the contributions of member physicians.

Scholarship Amounts

The scholarships available are entirely “need based” without regard to course of study, academic performance or year of school and are restricted for medical school expenses only. Scholarship award funds are distributed directly to the medical school in which the applicant is enrolled. Scholarships range from $2,000 - $10,000 per year, based on financial need. Financial need is determined in part by a financial need ranking by the applicable medical school.

Requirements for Application

Must be a citizen of the United States and a legal resident of the state of Tennessee as certified by the medical school in which enrolled
Must be currently enrolled in an accredited medical school within the state of Tennessee (newly accepted students for the next academic year are not eligible to apply)
Provide documentation of financial need to pursue a course of study in medicine by meeting Federal Unsubsidized William D. Ford Loan eligibility requirements
Must be a member of the Tennessee Medical Association

TMEF 2025-26 Scholarship Program Timeline

January 6: 2025-26 scholarship application opens
February 14: Preliminary report to schools on applicants
March 15: Preliminary report to schools on applicants
April 16: 2025-26 application closes, student applicant information sent to each school, schools complete Financial Aid information for each student
April 28: Completed Financial Aid information due from schools to TMA/TMEF. Email completed excel document to annika.sleenhof@tnmed.org.
May: TMEF BOD meets to award scholarships
May/June: Notify schools and selected students of scholarship awards; Students will receive award letters via email provided on application
June: First distribution checks to schools – 50% of total award value
December: Second distribution checks to schools – 50% of total award value
January 12, 2026: 2026-27 Call for scholarships to schools and application opens
