HIPAA Compliance Training

How well do you know the privacy and security rules protecting patient information under federal law?

Do you know when a release of a patient’s Protected Health Information (PHI) is allowed, and when it constitutes a violation?

The Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act of 1996 was landmark legislation intended to protect workers and their families from losing insurance coverage when they changed jobs. The act created standards governing the security and privacy of patient health information, which meant doctors and other healthcare providers had new rules to follow when it came to sharing and storing patient records.

HIPAA Compliance Training by TMA
The Tennessee Medical Association is stepping up to provide HIPAA compliance training and tools to help medical practice employees learn how to understand and navigate HIPAA privacy and security laws and apply them to real-life scenarios.

Health care is undergoing rapid change and physicians are increasingly challenged to keep up with new laws – and yet they must or face serious consequences. Breaches of HIPAA law are taken seriously and can result in civil and criminal fines and penalties – sometimes in the millions of dollars.

The TMA is committed to being a source of information and guidance to members as they implement HIPAA mandates and policies in their practices. On this page you will find links to education, staff training and checklist tools, as well as summaries of rules and regulations affecting the privacy of patient health information.
