TMA Statement on Governor's Call for Special Session

May 7, 2023

NASHVILLE — The Tennessee Medical Association (TMA) commends Gov. Bill Lee for taking an important first step in pursuit of safer and healthier communities in Tennessee through Executive Order 100 and his legislative proposal to enact temporary mental health orders of protection for at-risk individuals.

In the wake of the Covenant School tragedy, the proposed legislation represents an innovative approach to prevent future tragedies in our state while balancing the rights and responsibilities endowed by the Second Amendment. TMA appreciates the governor’s leadership on this complex issue and his willingness to work across the aisle to implement policy solutions that can preempt violence in our communities and protect Tennesseans from harm.

Our organization shares his commitment to improving public safety by keeping firearms out of the hands of individuals who present a danger to themselves and others. TMA will continue to promote policies that increase the accessibility of mental health treatment and reduce firearm-related deaths among Tennessee children and families.
